Annita Demetriou: Europe & Middle East – EPP Stance

DISY President Annita Demetriou emphasized that Europe cannot remain an indifferent observer to developments in the Middle East, during the European People's Party (EPP) summit in Brussels.
Demetriou stressed the need for a decisive diplomatic role for the EU to de-escalate tensions and establish a sustainable ceasefire, as well as to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. She also highlighted Cyprus' geostrategic role as a factor of stability and peace.
Discussions also covered topics such as European defense, the war in Ukraine, EU enlargement, competitiveness, climate change and migration.
Annita Demetriou welcomed the adoption of her proposals regarding strict conditions for participation in the common defense policy, solidarity on migration, support for electricity interconnections and Cyprus' accession to the Schengen area.
Finally, she welcomed the EPP's reference to the Cyprus issue, stressing that the reunification of Cyprus is a priority.
