Blackout in Eastern Cuba Due to Substation Failure

A blackout occurred in eastern Cuba on Wednesday night, affecting provinces such as HolguĂn, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo. The outage was caused by a failure at the HolguĂn 220 kV substation, according to the UniĂłn ElĂ©ctrica de Cuba (UNE).
Power outages are a frequent occurrence in Cuba due to the aging energy production and distribution system, fuel shortages, natural disasters, and economic crisis. Oil-fired power plants are struggling to meet demand, despite reduced oil imports from Venezuela, Russia, and Mexico.
