EU Pushes for Mercosur Trade Deal Implementation

European Union leaders are pushing for the implementation of the trade agreement with Mercosur countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay), despite opposition and the referral of the case to the European Court of Justice. The European Parliament voted to refer the agreement for a legality review, a process that may take up to two years.

The agreement aims to eliminate tariffs in a market of 700 million consumers, saving EU companies approximately €4 billion annually. Supporters of the agreement emphasize the need to counter US tariffs and declining exports to China.

However, the agreement faces opposition, mainly from European farmers, who fear competition from cheaper imports and lower production standards. The European Commission assures that there are safeguards for sensitive sectors.

While awaiting the legal opinion, there is the possibility of provisional implementation of the agreement, potentially as early as March, if Paraguay is the first to ratify the agreement.
