Overtourism: Risks for Greece and its Infrastructure

Greece faces increasing challenges due to overtourism, according to a report by the Independent. The report highlights the pressures on infrastructure, environmental degradation, and cracks in the appeal of popular destinations like Santorini.
Santorini, one of the most iconic islands, has seen a 24.4% decrease in visitors from January to May. Meanwhile, other islands such as Aegina, Poros, Lefkada, Fournoi and Kastelorizo are showing increased interest.
Dimitris Vagianos, professor of economics, warns that many smaller islands are repeating the mistakes of Mykonos and Santorini, with excessive construction and inadequate protection of their character. He also points out the lack of water as a significant problem.
The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) welcomes the diversification of destinations and promotes tourism throughout the year. The Minister of Tourism has announced plans to promote "climate-resilient tourism."
However, there are fears that these measures are insufficient and that Greece risks losing its authenticity if there are no coordinated reforms.
