Train vs Plane: Which is More Expensive in Europe?

According to a study by Greenpeace Europe, train travel in Europe is more expensive than flying in 54% of cases. The NGO analyzed 109 cross-border and 33 domestic trips where train travel was a feasible option.
In some instances, trains are up to 26 times more expensive. For example, a Barcelona-London route costs €389 by train compared to €14.99 by plane.
Greenpeace points out that people are encouraged to choose planes due to cost, even when a rail connection is available. In France, 95% of cross-border train journeys are more expensive than flights.
The NGO suggests night trains as an environmentally friendly option for long distances, although they are generally more expensive than low-cost flights. Greenpeace calls for cheaper rail transport and denounces the non-taxation of kerosene, while railway companies are subject to taxes and fees.
Domestically, train connections are cheaper than air travel in 70% of cases. Trains emit less CO2 per passenger-kilometer compared to airplanes.
