At Least 17 Dead in Brazil Bus Accident

At least 17 people have died after a bus overturned in the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, police said.

The accident occurred on Friday night when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which was carrying 30 passengers. According to authorities, the bus hit rocks on the side of the road and then overturned.

The driver was slightly injured and underwent a breathalyzer test, which came back negative. He has been taken into custody and is being questioned. Police said some passengers were thrown from the vehicle, suggesting they were likely not wearing seatbelts.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences to the families of the victims in a post.
