Takis Lambrias: Timely Thoughts on Europe and Europeans

Republishing timely thoughts by Takis Lambrias on Europe and Europeans, as expressed in his work "Europe the Phantom – In the Age of Globalization and American Hegemony" (Potamos Publications, 2000).
Takis (Panagiotis) Lambrias (1926-2001) was a journalist and politician, a close associate of Konstantinos Karamanlis. He served as director of Eleni Vlachou's "Mesimvrini", a member of parliament and MEP for ND, and a deputy minister.
In an excerpt from his book, Lambrias wonders whether, despite European integration, truly European citizens have been created, capable of playing a role in global affairs. He points out the increase in individualism and the focus on material prosperity, arguing that the "European-ness" of citizens is smaller today, both quantitatively and qualitatively, than it was 50 years ago.
He refers to the need for a new Europe, capable of resisting the challenges of globalization and inventing its future, rather than seeking meaning in history.
