Nearly 42,000 acres of forest land have been destroyed by recent fires in Attica, Evia, and Kythira, according to an analysis by the National Observatory of Athens.

Scientists at METEO, using very high-resolution satellite data from the WorldView-2 satellite, calculated the burned areas. Specifically:

  • Kythira: 26,880 acres
  • Pissonas, Evia: 12,810 acres
  • Kryoneri, Attica: 2,269 acres

The effects of the fires are multifaceted, including the destruction of flora and fauna, disruption of ecosystems, and severe economic impacts on local communities, especially in areas where tourism and agriculture are important. In addition, the risk of soil erosion and flooding is increased.
