A 33-year-old skier died yesterday after being swept away by an avalanche in Servières, in the French Alps, according to an announcement by the Gap prosecutor's office.

According to the prosecutor, the man was skiing with another skier, who managed to survive by holding onto a tree when the avalanche occurred. The victim died in hospital.

On Friday, a 65-year-old woman using special footwear to climb in the snow was also killed by a snowslide in Servières. Around 20 people have died in January due to avalanches in various mountain ranges of the Alps, in Austria, Switzerland and France.
