Spain Train Crash: Rail Defect Suspected in Deadly Accident

A train crash in the Adamuz region of Spain, resulting in 41 fatalities, is under investigation. Authorities are focusing on a defect exceeding 30 centimeters found on a rail of the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line.
The accident occurred when a train operated by the private company Iryo collided head-on with an Alvia train of the Spanish National Railway Company (Renfe). The collision was caused when wagons of the Iryo derailed, traveling at speeds over 200 km/h, and entered the opposite track.
Investigations are centered on the rail defect, likely caused by faulty welding or wear and tear over time. The Spanish Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, described the incident as "strange."
The accident is a blow to the prestige of the Spanish high-speed rail network, which spans 4,000 km.
