Serbia: Arrests in Novi Sad Tragedy Investigation

Former government officials have been arrested in Serbia in connection with the collapse of a railway station roof in Novi Sad in November 2024, which resulted in the death of 16 people.
Among those arrested is Tomislav Momirovic, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure from 2020-2022. Police also sought Goran Vesic, who is hospitalized. The arrests are related to an investigation into corruption during the reconstruction of the railway network.
Authorities are investigating financial irregularities that caused damage to the state budget of $115 million. The tragedy had caused mass protests and the resignation of the then-Prime Minister.
Student protests have been ongoing since November 2024, demanding accountability.
