Moderate socialist António José Seguro has won a landslide victory in the second round of the presidential elections in Portugal against far-right candidate André Ventura, according to results with votes counted in 95% of polling stations.

Seguro, 63, garnered 66% of the votes against 34% for Ventura, 43, and is set to succeed conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who served as President of the country for ten years, in early March.

Commenting on Seguro's victory, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Portugal's voice in support of 'common European values' remains 'strong'.

'Portuguese citizens have spoken and, in the face of the devastation caused by the storms, have shown remarkable democratic resilience,' the German politician commented via X.
