Russian Major General Vladimir Alexeyev, a member of the GRU secret service, was shot in Moscow. The 64-year-old is hospitalized with injuries to his arms, legs, and chest.

The perpetrator, whose identity is unknown, waited for Alexeyev outside his apartment and attacked him.

Alexeyev has served as deputy head of the GRU and has played a significant role in Russia's campaign in Syria and the war in Ukraine. He was allegedly the coordinator between the Ministry of Defense and Yevgeny Prigozhin's Wagner.

Alexeyev has been sanctioned by the US for interference in the 2016 US elections and by the EU for the poisoning of Sergei Skripal.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov blamed Ukraine for the assassination attempt, without providing evidence.
