Portugal's presidential elections will go to a historic runoff, with center-left candidate António José Seguro facing far-right candidate André Ventura. This is the first time since 1986 that the elections have gone to a second round.

According to preliminary results, Seguro received 31% of the votes, while Ventura received 23.5%. Seguro called for unity among all democratic forces to confront extremism.

Ventura's rise confirms the strengthening of the far right in Portugal, with the Chega party already becoming the official opposition. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stated that he would not give voting instructions for the second round.

Political scientist Paula Espírito Santo commented that the result is a defeat for the government, while the liberal João Cotrim Figueiredo and retired admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo received 16% and 12% respectively.

The second round will be held on February 8 and is expected to be decisive for Portugal's political future.
