Over 60,000 Heatwave Deaths in Europe in 2024

More than 60,000 people died in Europe during the summer of 2024 due to the heatwave, according to a new study.
The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, analyzed mortality data from 32 European countries and estimated that 62,775 deaths were attributable to the heat. This figure is almost 25% higher than the 50,798 deaths recorded in 2023.
Italy recorded the most deaths (19,000), followed by Spain and Germany. Greece had the highest death rate per million inhabitants.
The researchers suggest creating an early warning system to protect vulnerable people, especially the elderly, from heatwaves.
