On August 28, 1996, the divorce of Charles and Diana was finalized, marking the end of a tumultuous period for the British monarchy. The divorce, announced after years of tension and media coverage, had significant repercussions for the royal family and its public image.

1992 was described as the "annus horribilis" by Queen Elizabeth, but 1996 marked its culmination, with the divorce of Charles and Diana changing the way the public perceived the monarchy. This followed the divorce of Sarah Ferguson.

Diana ceased to hold the title "Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales" and took control of her life. According to Dr. Andy Mycock, these divorces signaled a shift in how the royal family was viewed by the public.

Diana stated in an interview that she felt alone even beside her husband, while the presence of Camilla Parker Bowles in Charles's life created tension. In 1989, Diana confronted Camilla, expressing her desire to keep her husband.

Following a proposal by Queen Elizabeth, the divorce was finalized on August 28, 1996. According to biographer Ingrid Seward, on the day of the divorce, Diana and Charles cried together. Diana retained the title of Princess of Wales and received £15 million.

In her letters, Diana expressed the difficulty of adjusting to her new life after the divorce. Tragically, her life ended a year later in a car accident in Paris.
