Norway and the European Union: A Dilemma

Norway faces a critical juncture regarding its relationship with the European Union. Although a member of the European Economic Area (EEA), which grants access to the single market, Norwegians do not have a full voice in shaping European policy.
Foreign Minister Espen Barth and his opponent, Ine Eriksen, emphasize that the cost of not participating in the EU is increasing, as Norway is left out of decisions that affect it.
Three scenarios are being considered:
- Status quo plus: Improving the EEA, maintaining control in sectors such as fisheries and agriculture.
- Full membership: Participating in all EU bodies with full voting rights, but with potential impacts on fisheries policy and sovereignty.
- 'Swiss route': Bilateral agreements, a model considered cumbersome by the EU.
The Labour and Conservative parties are leaving open the possibility of a shift towards the EU, as the cost of non-participation increases.
