Meteo: The 8 Largest Wildfires in Greece in 2025

The summer of 2025 in Greece was marked by significant losses in forest and agricultural land. According to an analysis by the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, based on data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), a total of 473,930 acres were burned from the beginning of the year to the end of August.
2025 ranks as the fifth most destructive fire season of the last 20 years. The eight largest wildfires affected the following areas:
- Arta
- Achaia
- Zakynthos
- Kythira
- Feneos - Corinthia
- Keratea - Attica
- Chios (two incidents)
In the above areas, the total burned area amounted to approximately 260,000 acres, which corresponds to more than half of the total burned area for the year. Indicative of the severity is the destruction in Chios, where approximately 15% of the island's total area was burned, as well as the extensive destruction of a section of virgin forest in Feneos, Corinthia.
