In Maastricht, Netherlands, remains found beneath a church floor are being investigated to determine if they belong to the legendary d'Artagnan, known from Alexandre Dumas' novel 'The Three Musketeers'.

Charles de Batz de Castelmore, known as Count d'Artagnan, was a close associate of French King Louis XIV. He was killed during the siege of Maastricht in 1673.

Deacon Jos Valke stated he is almost certain the remains belong to d'Artagnan. A sample of the bones has been sent to Germany for DNA analysis.

Archaeologist Wim Dijkman, while optimistic, is awaiting the DNA results to confirm the identity.

The remains were found beneath the altar. A bullet and a coin from 1660 were also discovered.
