A wolf attacked a woman in the center of Hamburg, German authorities reported. The incident occurred near an IKEA store on Grosse Bergstrasse.

According to the BBC, the woman attempted to lead the wolf away from the road when it bit her in the face. The woman was taken to a hospital and has since been discharged.

The wolf was located late in the evening at the Binnenalster lake. Police pulled it from the water, but it took about an hour to capture it. The animal is now receiving veterinary care.

A spokesperson for Hamburg's Ministry of the Environment stated that the wolf had been sighted in the western part of the city in recent days. It is believed to be the first wolf attack on a human since the reintroduction of the animals in the 1990s.

Last week, the German upper house approved wolf hunting from July 1st to October 31st.
