Weather: Strong Meltemia Winds and High Fire Risk

Strong Meltemia winds and high temperatures are expected, increasing the risk of fire in four regions of Greece. According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), wind gusts in the central Aegean will exceed 70 km/h.

A very high fire risk (risk category 4) is forecast for:

  • Attica Region
  • Sterea Ellada Region (Viotia, Evia, Skyros)
  • North Aegean Region (Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria)
  • Crete Region

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has informed the relevant services to be on increased alert. Temperatures are also expected to rise, with the mercury reaching 37 degrees Celsius in eastern mainland Greece and possibly 40 degrees Celsius from September 2nd.

Winds in the Aegean will blow from northerly directions with intensities of 5-6 Beaufort. In Attica, the temperature will range from 23 to 30-32 degrees Celsius.
