Central Macedonia: Population Decline Reaching 33%

A new study reveals that the Region of Central Macedonia is facing a significant population decline, reaching up to 33% in some areas. The research results were presented by the Deputy Regional Governor of Health and Social Solidarity, Melina Dermentzopoulou.
The study, which examined both quantitative and qualitative data, highlights the worsening demographic problem in the region. According to Ms. Dermentzopoulou, the Region of Central Macedonia is experiencing a sharp population decline, with very few exceptions.
Only 7 out of 38 municipalities show a slight increase, while the majority, especially in the P.E. of Serres, Kilkis, Pella, and Halkidiki, record a decrease that often exceeds 10%, reaching 33% in Nea Zichni Serres. A significant percentage, about 30% of citizens aged 17-44, are hesitant to have children due to economic, personal, and professional reasons.
The study concludes that the Region of Central Macedonia is entering a phase of "hyper-aging", with serious implications for labor, health, welfare, and development dynamics. In 2024, the population stands at 1,778,896, down 5.7% from 2011. Births are steadily declining, while deaths far exceed births, leading to a sharp natural population decline.
