Spain: 1000 Heatwave Deaths in July

More than 1,000 deaths in Spain are attributed to the heatwave in July, marking an increase of over 50% compared to 2024, according to a state institute.
Specifically, 1,060 deaths, “57% more compared to the previous year,” were announced by the Spanish Ministry of Health, based on estimates from the “MoMo” system (Modelo de Monitorizacion de la Mortalidad).
This system collects the number of deaths daily and calculates the deviation in mortality compared to historical data, taking into account external factors such as temperatures.
In July 2024, the deaths attributed to the heat were 674, while in the following month they increased to 1,271.
Health Minister MĂłnica GarcĂa emphasized the importance of protecting against heatwaves, as they are a significant risk factor for mortality.
In total, 1,180 deaths were attributed to heatwaves between May 16th and July 13th, compared to 70 in the same period in 2024.
Spain, like Portugal, is affected by a second heatwave, with the Spanish Meteorological Service (Aemet) expecting it to last at least until the end of the week.
