Germany: Oldest workforce in the Eurozone

Germany has the oldest workforce in the Eurozone, with 24% of workers aged 55-64, according to the Federal Statistical Office Destatis. This is significantly higher than the Eurozone average of 20.1%.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz is encouraging the extension of working life to address the labor shortage due to the demographic problem. In Germany, the average retirement age is 64 years and 8 months and will gradually increase to 67 years by 2029.
The German government has adopted tax breaks for those working after the legal retirement age. Increasing the retirement age to 70 is also being considered.
Destatis explains that the aging of the workforce is due to the aging population and the trend towards later retirement. In 2025, a population decrease of approximately 100,000 inhabitants was recorded in Germany.
