Germany is engaged in a public debate regarding raising the retirement age. The Minister of Economy, Katerina Reiche, proposes that Germans work longer, potentially up to the age of 70.

The transition to retirement at 67, which will be completed in 2029, is not considered sufficient by the Minister. Reiche argues that remaining in retirement for one-third of adult life is not sustainable in the long term.

The Social Democrats (SPD) strongly oppose raising the retirement age. The Secretary-General of the SPD, Tim KlĂĽssendorf, stated that such an increase would amount to a reduction in pensions, which the party will not allow.

The new Minister of Labor, Bärbel Bas (SPD), proposes including civil servants and members of Parliament in the social security fund, a proposal rejected by the Christian Union CDU/CSU.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced an "autumn of social reforms" but wishes to avoid intra-governmental friction.
