French Anesthesiologist on Trial for Murders of 12 Patients

A French anesthesiologist, Frédéric Péchier, is on trial in Besançon, France, accused of poisoning 30 patients, resulting in the deaths of 12 between 2008 and 2017.
The 53-year-old doctor is accused of introducing lethal substances into patients' IV drips at two private clinics. A prosecutor alleged that Péchier poisoned patients to harm colleagues and showcase his abilities by resuscitating them.
The trial began with jury selection. Péchier maintains his innocence but faces a life sentence if convicted. Despite the charges, he was never detained and had been conditionally allowed to practice medicine, without patient contact. He has not practiced medicine since 2017.
The verdict is expected on December 19.
