France: Prime Minister Bayrou to Seek Confidence Vote
Share on:

French Prime Minister François Bayrou announced that he will seek a vote of confidence from parliament on September 8. His goal is to secure support for his government's budget, which includes spending cuts of 40 billion euros.

The leader of the National Rally party, Jordan Bardella, stated that his party will vote against the government. Marine Le Pen and France Unbowed also expressed their intention to vote against it.

Socialist MP Arthur Delaporte said he does not see how his party could support the vote of confidence. The votes of the Socialists are considered crucial to the outcome of the vote.

Bayrou acknowledged that securing confidence is a "risky bet", but considers it necessary due to the country's large debt. The vote will determine whether there is enough support for shrinking the budget, as the government tries to reduce the deficit.

Protests are scheduled for September 10, comparable to the "Yellow Vests" protests of 2018.

Bayrou has proposed abolishing two holidays and freezing social welfare spending.
