French police shot and killed a man who threatened them with a knife near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

The man was neutralized by police fire and taken to a hospital, where he died shortly after.

The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m., shortly before the flame lighting ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A gendarme was slightly injured in the attack.

The perpetrator had been convicted in Belgium in 2013 for a knife attack against police officers. According to Le Parisien newspaper, the perpetrator was 48-year-old Brahim, who in June 2012 had stabbed two police officers in Brussels.

At the time, he stated that he wanted to punish the Belgian authorities for banning the burqa in public places. He had been sentenced to several years in prison and was released two months ago.
