Over 1,000 vehicles were torched and more than 500 people were detained in France during New Year's Eve, according to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior.

In total, 505 people were detained, while in 403 cases the detentions turned into arrests. The ministry described this year's night as 'calmer' compared to 2025.

Despite the relative de-escalation in incidents, the number of vehicles torched increased, reaching 1,173, compared to 984 on New Year's Eve 2025.

Police officers were targeted by fireworks in various cities, including Nice, Lyon, Strasbourg and Rennes. Approximately 90,000 police officers and gendarmes had been mobilized since December 31.

In Paris, 125 people were arrested, ranging in age from 17 to 53 years old.
