Europe: Preparing for War, Infrastructure Lags

Europe is increasing defense spending amid geopolitical tensions, but the continent's infrastructure may not be ready for the rapid movement of troops and equipment.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented the ReArm Europe plan, aiming to mobilize up to €800 billion to strengthen European defense. The StopReArmEurope organization opposes the plan, arguing that these funds will be diverted from social services.

Greek Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, warned that Europe's roads, bridges, and railways are unsuitable for the rapid transport of military equipment. The EU plans to invest €17 billion in 500 infrastructure projects to improve military mobility.

Mr. Tzitzikostas stressed that the continent's defense would be impossible if European armies cannot move quickly, adding that the Commission intends to reduce bureaucracy at border crossings.

The military mobility plan complements the agreement of NATO members to increase the defense spending target to 5% of GDP.
