Europe: Weapon Factories Expand Amid War Preparations

Weapon factories in Europe are experiencing a significant boom, expanding their facilities across areas reaching 7 million square meters, according to a Financial Times analysis.

This expansion is fueled by new EU defense funding programs, aimed at strengthening Europe's defense capabilities amid geopolitical tensions.

The analysis, based on satellite imagery, shows that construction growth at weapon factories has intensified since February 2022, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Data from Sentinel-1 satellites indicate that approximately one-third of the sites examined showed signs of expansion or construction work.

The largest expansion involves a joint project between Germany's Rheinmetall and Hungary's state-owned defense company N7 Holding, with a ammunition and explosives production unit in Várpalota, Hungary. The EU's ASAP program, with an investment of 500 million euros, also supports the expansion of defense industries.

EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius stated that the annual ammunition production capacity at European weapon factories has increased from 300,000 to approximately 2 million by the end of this year.

The EU is negotiating a new 1.5 billion euro defense industry support program, aimed at boosting the production of missiles, air defense systems, artillery, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
