Eurostat: Greece Second in EU in Firefighting Forces

According to Eurostat data, Greece ranks second in the EU in terms of the number of firefighters relative to the total number of employees. In 2024, 0.41% of employees in Greece were firefighters, more than double the European average (0.19%).
Only Croatia had a higher percentage (0.45%). In contrast, Northern European countries such as the Netherlands and Denmark have the lowest percentages.
In 2023, Greece ranked third in spending on fire protection relative to GDP, allocating approximately 0.7% of its GDP. Romania and Estonia ranked first.
According to the Copernicus system, since the beginning of the year, 10.23 million acres have been burned in the EU, while in Greece the burned areas are estimated at 468,730 acres.
