Helsinki has achieved a remarkable milestone, completing a full year without any road traffic deaths. According to Politico, this success is attributed to a range of strategies, including reduced speed limits and investments in pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure.

Municipal authorities in Helsinki have imposed speed limits of 30 km/h in most residential areas and the city center since 2021. This was accompanied by the installation of 70 new speed cameras and the implementation of the national 'Vision Zero' policy.

Additionally, the city has invested in an extensive network of bicycle paths exceeding 1,500 kilometers and has enhanced public transportation with zero-emission vehicles. Roni Utriainen, a traffic engineer with the city's Urban Environment Division, stated that these upgrades have contributed to a reduction in car use and serious accidents.

Statistics show that between 2003 and 2023, the number of road traffic injuries in Helsinki decreased from 727 to just 14. The European Commission has highlighted Helsinki's success as it pushes for a reduction in road traffic deaths across Europe.
