EU Court: Dispute over Hungary's €10 Billion

The Court of Justice of the European Union is considering the potential return of €10 billion from Hungary, sparking strong reactions from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The case concerns funds that were released in December 2023, but the European Parliament is challenging the legality of the decision.
Advocate General Tamara Ćapeta proposes annulling the release decision, arguing that the European Commission incorrectly applied the rule of law requirements. The opinion was issued at a politically sensitive time, as Orbán faces elections in Hungary in April.
MEPs accuse the Commission of political opportunism, while the Hungarian side links the move to the country's opposition to Ukraine's accession to the EU. A Commission representative defended the decision, stressing that it was based on a thorough assessment of the reforms undertaken by Hungary.
The Court's final decision is expected to set a precedent regarding the assessment of rule of law violations by member states.
