Australia: Mother Exonerated After 20 Years in Prison – Compensation Awarded

Kathleen Folbigg, once labeled "Australia's worst mother," will receive compensation for the 20 years she spent in prison. She was exonerated in the deaths of her four children, aided by genetic evidence.

Folbigg was convicted in 2003 but released in 2023 after a judicial review found the babies may have died from a genetic condition. Her lawyer stated she received a compensation offer of €1,116,598, which she called "unfair."

Folbigg's four young children died suddenly between 1989 and 1999. Prosecutors claimed she had smothered them. In 2003, she was sentenced to 40 years in prison, later reduced to 30 years.

A 2023 inquiry concluded that her children could have died from natural causes due to rare genetic mutations. Her lawyer stated that the compensation does not reflect the suffering she endured.
