Andrés Ritter Appointed as New European Chief Prosecutor

Andrés Ritter is set to become the new European Chief Prosecutor, succeeding Laura Kövesi. His appointment has been approved by the EU Council, and his term begins on November 1, 2026.

German national Andrés Ritter joined the German public prosecutor's office in 1995 and has served as Deputy European Chief Prosecutor since 2020.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) is an independent EU body responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes affecting the Union's financial interests, such as fraud and corruption.

The European Chief Prosecutor is appointed for a non-renewable term of seven years.

By the end of 2025, the EPPO had 3,602 ongoing investigations, with an estimated damage of over €67.2 billion.

Currently, 24 member states participate in the EPPO.
