Outcry in Germany Over Cologne Cathedral Entrance Fee Plans

Strong reactions have erupted in Germany regarding plans to introduce an entrance fee to the Cologne Cathedral. Church officials argue that the measure is necessary to cover operating costs, which amount to €16 million annually.
The proposed ticket would cost between €12 and €15, while worshippers wishing to pray will be admitted free of charge. Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts approximately six million visitors each year.
Opposition comes from various quarters, with many arguing that imposing a fee will restrict access to the cathedral for the less affluent. An architect, head of a non-profit association, stated that any price above €10 would be 'irresponsible'.
Cologne Cathedral, whose construction began in 1248 and was completed in 1880, is the tallest church with two towers in the world. Despite severe damage sustained during World War II, it remained standing and is a major attraction for the city.
