Hong Kong on Alert: Typhoon Wipha Threatens

Hong Kong authorities issued a warning for “typhoon-strength winds” as Typhoon Wipha approaches the southern coast of China. The warning, the highest level of alert, led to the closure of kindergartens and schools, as well as the cancellation of approximately 500 flights.
Wipha was located 60 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong and continued to strengthen as it approached the coast of Guangdong province. The Hong Kong Observatory raised the alert to level “T10”, warning of winds with an average speed of 118 kilometers per hour or more.
The provinces of Hainan and Guangdong in China were also placed on alert. Approximately 200 people took refuge in temporary accommodation centers. In 2023, Hong Kong issued a “T10” level warning for Super Typhoon Saola. In the Philippines, two people are missing after Wipha passed through.
