Sudan: 11 Killed in Gold Mine Collapse
Share on:

Eleven workers were killed and seven injured when part of a gold mine collapsed in northeastern Sudan. The accident occurred at a mine in the isolated Howayid zone, between the cities of Atbara and Haiya.

The national mining company announced the incident, noting that safety measures in Sudanese mines are considered inadequate. Dangerous chemicals are often used, polluting neighboring areas.

Since April 2023, the army of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has been clashing with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces of General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The war efforts of both sides are largely funded by mining activity.

According to experts, a large part of the gold mined in Sudan is illegally transferred to Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt, and from there to the United Arab Emirates.
