A powerful earthquake has struck Afghanistan, resulting in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. According to Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, at least 800 deaths and 2,500 injuries have been recorded in Kunar province alone. In addition, 12 deaths and 255 injuries have been reported in the neighboring province of Nangarhar.

The epicenter of the 6.0-magnitude earthquake was located near the city of Jalalabad, with a focal depth of only 8 kilometers. This disaster exacerbates the existing humanitarian crisis in the country, which is facing problems due to the reduction in international aid.

Rescuers continue their efforts to search for survivors in the rubble, while international media broadcast images of helicopters transporting the injured. Nangarhar province was also hit by sudden floods last week.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, as it is located in an area where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates intersect.
