Peru: State of Emergency Declared in Lima

Peruvian President José Herí declared a state of emergency in Lima and Callao for 30 days, starting midnight Tuesday. This decision was made due to a surge in crime and extortion.
The government will deploy the military for patrols and restrict constitutional rights, such as the right of assembly. This is President Herí's first major decision since taking office two weeks ago.
Lima was previously placed under a state of emergency from March to July following the murder of singer Paul Flores. Last week, protests against insecurity led to clashes and deaths.
The security crisis contributed to the impeachment of former President Dina Boluarte on October 10. President Herí will remain in power until July 2026.
