Pakistan: Over 1 Million Displaced by Floods

More than 1 million people have been displaced from their homes in Pakistan's Punjab province due to the worst floods in 40 years. Torrential monsoon rains and the release of water from dams in India caused three rivers to overflow.
Authorities were forced to create openings in riverbanks, resulting in over 1,400 villages being flooded. Residents of villages like Kadirabad were forced to wade through chest-high water.
India issued three flood warnings to Pakistan, calling them a humanitarian measure. At least 12 people have died in Punjab province this week, while the total death toll in Pakistan since late June stands at 819.
The floods have worsened in Punjab, a major producer of wheat, rice, and cotton, due to the release of water into the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers.
