Mexico: Notorious Drug Lord 'El Mencho' Killed, Aftermath and Next Steps

Notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho,' has been killed during an operation by Mexican authorities. The operation triggered a wave of violence across the country.

'El Mencho,' leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), succumbed to his injuries after being apprehended near Tapalpa. The operation was based on information from an associate of one of his partners.

His death sparked riots, arson, and clashes. According to authorities, at least 25 members of the National Guard were killed. The government has deployed thousands of soldiers.

The operation took place amid pressure on President Claudia Sheinbaum to combat drug trafficking to the U.S. Analysts believe that the neutralization of 'El Mencho' is a symbolic blow to the CJNG, but does not necessarily imply its dissolution.
