The Mexican government has deployed 10,000 soldiers to the state of Jalisco following the death of Nemesio Oseguera, also known as 'El Mencho', the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

His death triggered violent reactions, with cartel members blocking roads, setting vehicles on fire, and attacking various facilities in 20 states. At least 25 members of the National Guard, a security guard, and a prosecutor's office employee were killed in the clashes.

Authorities hope to restore order before the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico, the USA, and Canada will co-host. Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco, is one of the cities that will host matches.

President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that there are no more roadblocks, although journalists reported otherwise. Nemesio Oseguera was considered the last of the great 'godfathers' of Mexico.

Washington had designated the cartel as a 'terrorist organization' in 2025. Sheinbaum confirmed that there was an exchange of information between Mexico and the USA for the capture of Oseguera.

His death leaves a power vacuum in the cartel, with possible splits expected. Oseguera's 'right-hand man', known as 'El Tuli', was also killed in clashes.
