At least 52 civilians, including children and women, have been massacred by jihadists in the Beni and Lubero regions of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The perpetrators were armed with machetes and axes.

Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels, linked to the Islamic State, attacked villages, killing residents in their homes. According to reports, the rebels gathered residents, tied them up, and slaughtered them.

The death toll may rise as searches for more victims continue. The ADF is one of several armed groups operating in the area.

The UN mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO) confirmed the deaths of at least 52 people, including eight women and two children.
