Hong Kong Hit by Strongest August Storms Since 1884

Hong Kong is experiencing its strongest August storms since 1884, causing severe disruptions across the city.
Authorities issued a 'black' rainstorm warning, leading to school closures and suspension of public transport. Over 350 mm of rain fell by 2 p.m. (06:00 GMT), the highest daily rainfall for August since 1884.
The torrential rain prompted the extension of the highest rainstorm warning until 5 p.m. Water reached ankle-deep levels outside Hong Kong's largest hospital, leading to the closure of clinics citywide.
Meteorologists link the extreme rainfall and devastating floods to climate change, posing increasing challenges for authorities. The storms follow deadly floods that struck southern China over the weekend.
Hong Kong, Guangdong province, and Macau form the core of the Greater Bay Area initiative. Airports in the region reported cancellation rates of approximately 20% on Tuesday.
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange remained open, while courts, tribunals, and registry offices remained closed for at least two hours after the 'black' rainstorm warning was lifted.
