Traveler's Rights: What You Need to Know

Ahead of the summer holidays, the European Consumer Centre informs travelers about their rights.

In the event of a significant delay, denied boarding, or flight cancellation, passengers may be entitled to financial compensation, unless there are extraordinary circumstances. Assistance is also provided with meals, drinks, communication, accommodation, and transportation, depending on the distance and duration of the delay. Compensation ranges from €250 to €600.

The Montreal Convention ensures compensation for baggage damage, unless it is due to a defect in the baggage itself. A damage report must be submitted within 7 days, while for delayed or lost baggage within 21 days.

For car rentals, prices vary depending on the type, duration, and season. Consumers should carefully read the terms and conditions. Before pickup, the condition of the car should be checked and any damage recorded. A valid driving license of at least 1 year and compliance with a minimum age are required.

Hotel bookings are not specifically regulated by the EU, but general rules apply. There is no right of withdrawal for bookings with a specific date, and cancellation fees may apply.
