Majorca's 'Secret' Beach Transformed into a Garbage Dump

The once pristine Caló des Moro beach in Majorca has been transformed into a garbage dump due to overtourism. The beach gained popularity through TikTok and Instagram, attracting thousands of tourists and sparking outrage among locals.

Last year, authorities asked content creators to promote lesser-known spots on the island, leading to over 1,300 videos on TikTok with more than 10 million views. The Daily Mail reports that tourists are queuing to find a spot on the beach, leaving behind piles of garbage.

Access to the beach requires descending 120 steep steps, but this does not deter tourists. It is estimated that 70 kilograms of sand are lost from the beach every day, while six tons of sand are lost every three months.

Residents, outraged by overtourism, protested in June, demanding to 'reclaim their beaches.' Over 300 protesters unfurled banners, expressing their opposition to the situation.
