Reindeer Races in Finland: Pompon Wins

Traditional reindeer races in Finland drew hundreds of spectators to the town of Salla last weekend. Approximately 1,000 people attended the races, despite the low temperatures.

Spectators watched as reindeer galloped across the snowy track, pulling their handlers on skis. The winner of Sunday's (8/3) competition was the reindeer named Pompon.

"Pompon is an extremely fast and smart animal," said Hannu Kruupula, owner of the winning reindeer. Reindeer races have a long history in the region, with a tradition dating back to the 1950s.

Spectators also enjoyed reindeer soup and kampanisu, a local pastry specialty.
