Albert Einstein, renowned for his theory of relativity, designed a pioneering refrigerator in 1926 in collaboration with Leo Szilard.

The aim was to create a safer alternative to refrigerants like methyl chloride, which were toxic and had led to tragic incidents.

The "Einstein-Szilard" refrigerator had no moving parts and used butane, ammonia, and water, designed to be fully sealed to prevent leaks.

Despite the innovation, the technology of the time did not allow for its widespread application due to energy inefficiencies and the use of harmful gases. The economic crisis in Germany also contributed to the project's abandonment.

In 2008, an upgrade of the design was proposed with environmentally friendly gases and solar energy, but it was not implemented, as compressor refrigerators remain the dominant choice.
